Resting Metabolic Rate

Resting metabolic rate (or resting “caloric burn rate”) is a measure of how quickly your body expends energy while at rest. This rate can help you calculate how many calories your body needs to sustain function while at rest, estimate total daily caloric needs, and plan a weight loss/gain/maintenance plan.

  • Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is measured with gas analysis through indirect calorimetry (the heat created from production of carbon dioxide and nitrogen waste or from oxygen consumption) during a rested 10-minute gas collection.

    • Don't eat or exercise 4-5 hours prior to your test.

    • Don't drink coffee 4-5 hours prior to your test.

    • Don't smoke or drink alcohol 2 hours prior to your test.

    • Don't participate in vigorous/high intensity weight training 12 hours prior to your test.

    • Do come rested and relaxed.
